Turning Question Level Analysis Into a Revision Plan Students Actually Follow

Most science departments already collect Question Level Analysis (QLA) after mock exams. The data is there — a spreadsheet showing which questions each student got right or wrong, broken down by topic and specification point. The harder problem is turning that spreadsheet into something a 15-year-old will actually use to revise.

The spreadsheet-to-action gap

A QLA spreadsheet is built for a teacher's eyes, not a student's. Conditional formatting and percentage columns tell a head of science exactly where a class is weak, but handed straight to a student it rarely changes what they do at home. Students need three things a raw spreadsheet doesn't give them: a short, prioritised list of weak topics, practice questions matched to those topics, and a way to see progress over time.

A simple W-W-S structure works well

One pattern that holds up well for GCSE science revision is Weakness–Weakness–Strength (W-W-S): each practice session opens with two questions from the student's weakest topics, then closes with one from a topic they're already confident in. This keeps sessions focused on the areas that will move a grade, while ending on a note of success rather than frustration — which matters for keeping disengaged students coming back.
